Winners at Greene County Middle School in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest, sponsored locally by VFW Post 9599, were announced at a school assembly Monday morning.
Madison Hayes won first place. She was awarded $50 and her essay will be forwarded to the district competition. Avery Walker placed second and received $20 and Jonathan Mobley placed third place and received $10.
Their certificates were awarded by Post 9599 commander Don Ihnken and essay chairperson Jim Riley. Teacher Tammy Brophy was also recognized for her efforts to promote participation in the contest.
This year 74 Greene County students wrote essays on the theme “The America I Believe In.”
Each year, more than 125,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the contest. According to the VFW’s website, the essay contest encourages students to examine America’s history and their own experiences in modern American society. The students write an essay of 300-400 words which is judged based on knowledge of the theme, theme development, and clarity of ideas.
